How long should a Pilates session be?

October 3, 2020

Hi guys, Em from PPF here to answer another commonly asked question

How long should I exercise for?

To answer how long a Pilates session should be, we need to answer how long a recommended exercise session should be. We also need to answer how many days a week it is recommended that you exercise.

Generally speaking, 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise a minimum of five days a week (150 minutes per week) is considered a good average. Moderate-intensity exercise can include:

â—‰ Matwork Pilates, Pilates Interval Training or Reformer Pilates workout,

â—‰ a Yoga workout,

â—‰ Brisk walking,

â—‰ Swimming

With regards to high-intensity or more vigorous aerobic exercise: it is recommended to spend at least 25 minutes three days a week (75 minutes per week). High-intensity exercise can include:

â—‰ a Barre workout,

â—‰ a HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) workout,

â—‰ Running,

â—‰ Dancing,

â—‰ a team sport such as netball, soccer, basketball, etc.

As a general goal, aim for at least 30 minutes exercise activity every day. A combination of moderate and vigorous exercise a week is highly recommended.

Short on Time?

It is all well and good to say that you should exercise at least 30 minutes a day, everyday. But what if you are short on time, due to juggling kids, work, housework, etc? Research shows that even small amounts of physical activity will benefit you. Being active for short periods of time during each day can add to the recommended 150 minutes of exercise a week quicker than you think! Remember that any activity is better than none.

Below are some ideas to get your exercise in (and I have personally done ALL of these myself when I can't get a 50 minute class in!):

â—‰ Do a 25-30 minute Matwork Pilates, Pilates Interval Training (PIT), Barre workout, HIIT workout, Yoga class from home! PPF has an Online Membership which means you do not have to leave your house to get your workout in.

â—‰ Go for a 15-20 minute walk one to two times a day: pushing a pram will help make this workout harder!

â—‰ Break a workout in half: perform the first 15 minutes when you have 15 minutes at the beginning of the day, then come back to the workout in the middle, end of the day, whenever you have time!

â—‰ Run after your kid outside for 15-30 minutes!

â—‰ Try our 20 minute Pilates Interval Training (PIT) workout, available below!

So, how long should a Pilates session be?

There is not one answer to this!

Yes, we would love if you all could go to a 50 minute Pilates class, like the ones we offer at our PPF studios. We continually add to our timetables to make our classes more accessible for everything.

But we know that it is really hard for everyone to get to a 50 minute class at least 5 days a week!

A Pilates session can be beneficial if it is 10, 15, 20, 30, 40 or 50 minutes. Even a 10 minute Pilates session will help improve your muscle strength, add to your recommended weekly exercise amount, and make you feel great. Try our 20 minute Pilates Interval Training or PIT workout below: it will work your abs, arms and legs, all in JUST 20 minutes.
